Dept. of Computer Science, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology

Established in 1966, the Department of Computer Science at New Mexico Tech includes courses in both theoretical and applied computer science. These courses cover current concepts and major applications of the field.

The Bachelor of Science program emphasizes fundamental principles and provides a careful balance between the applications of computer technology and the theory of computing. In addition to the required fundamental computer science courses, students must also take technical electives to broaden their knowledge in major computer science areas. Graduates of the computer science bachelor's program will be well prepared for industry employment or graduate study.

The Master of Science program is designed for students who wish to further broaden or deepen their knowledge of computer science. Both thesis and non-thesis options are offered; an independent study report is required for the non-thesis option. Master's students usually participate in faculty research projects to complete their thesis or independent study.

New Mexico Tech's Department of Computer Science also offers a Ph.D. program. The program is oriented toward applied research in computer science, and has been highly inter-disciplinary in nature.

In addition to teaching assistantships and departmental research assistantships, many computer science graduate students receive support from New Mexico Tech's various research divisions such as ICASA, PRRC, and EMRTC.

In 2001, the computer science faculty, in collaboration with the management faculty, established the Information Technology Program with emphasis on Secure Information Systems and Information Assurance. In 2002, New Mexico Tech received designation as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education from the National Security Agency.
