SBBD is the official database event of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC). It has been the largest venue in Latin America for presentation and discussion of research results in the database domain. In its 24th edition, the symposium will be held in the city of Fortaleza, in the state of Ceara, Northeast of Brazil, in October 5-7, 2009. SBBD joins researchers, students and practitioners, from Brazil and abroad, for discussing problems related to the main topics in modern database technologies. Traditionally, SBBD has gathered nearly 500 attendees. In past editions, SBBD has been organized in cooperation with ACM/SIGMOD (pending approval) and partially sponsored by the VLDB Endownment. Besides the technical sessions, the symposium also includes invited talks and tutorials given by distinguished speakers from the international research community.  Additionally, SBBD comprises a Thesis Workshop, a Demos Session, a Poster Session and several workshops co-organized with the Brazilian Software Engineering Symposium. 

==ymposium Venue==
Fortaleza (Portuguese for fortress) is the State capital of Ceara, located in the sunny northeastern region of Brazil. With a population of more than 2.5 million, Fortaleza is a modern metropolis with greenish-blue sea, beautiful white-sand beaches, softy wind and a vibrating nightlife. Its complete tourism infrastructure and a rapidly growing industry make it one of the most important cities in the region in economic terms. Fortaleza has been for the last 3 years one of the most searched for cities in Brazil during holidays, second only to Rio. Fortaleza has a mild to warm  temperature averaging at 27C (82F) all year around.  Fortaleza is very well served of top-class restaurants. From seafood to the famous brazilian  barbecues, from feijoada (a black beans dish) to international cuisine (French, Italian, etc), Fortaleza has restaurants for all tastes at a very reasonable price. As an example, the top seafood restaurant in Fortaleza (called “Milmares”) charges for their seafood festival R$ 32 (around US$ 15) per person. Other places are more reasonable. Top-class Brazilian barbecue locations also charge around R$ 30 (US$ 14) per person.  Apart from its many tourist and gastronomic attractions, Fortaleza holds several academic and research institutions, including three major universities (UNIFOR, UFC and UECE) and several other smaller ones. Its emerging IT industry has been attracting many IT professionals from other regions of Brazil, which has steadily increased the local demand for IT-related university courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Applications and Experiences Track accepts papers proposing to adapt existing database technologies in some specific context, innovative commercial database implementations as well as reports and analysis of experiences in applying recent research advances in database  to practical situations. The papers will be judged by their appropriateness for the track in which they are being evaluated. Thus, appropriate placement of papers is important. The program committee may contact the authors and suggest to move their paper to the other track in order to ensure a fairer evaluation. 

==Submission Guidelines==
Submitted papers to both tracks can be written in Portuguese or English. Submission in English is strongly encouraged since the papers will be included in the ACM SIGMOD DiSC (http://www.acm.org/sigmod/disclist). Authors of all accepted papers must formally allow their papers to be published with SIGMOD's DiSC, otherwise the papers will not be presented nor published. A preliminary version of the proceedings, including all the accepted papers, will be available to the symposium attendees.  
Papers submitted to SBBD must not have been simultaneously submitted to any other forum (conference or journal), nor should they have already been published elsewhere. The acceptance of a paper implies that at least one of its authors will register for the symposium to present it. Submitted papers will be reviewed based on originality, relevance, technical soundness and clarity of presentation.
Before submitting a paper, and no later than April 25th 2009, authors must register its title, list of authors, track and abstract through the submission Web page at https://submissoes.sbc.org.br/. Papers must be submitted by May 9th, 2008 using the same submission site. Authors should choose for one track at the registration phase. The chosen track will be the track to which the full version should be submitted. Submitted papers must not exceed 15 pages. Papers may be composed using the SBC template (http://www.sbc.org.br/index.php?language=2&subject=282) or with font size 12pt, 1.5 line space, and single column. Papers exceeding this limit will be automatically rejected without being reviewed by the Program Committee. In addition, papers must be submitted in PDF format. Formats other than PDF will NOT be accepted. However, exceptionally and upon request, generic postscript might be accepted.

==Best Paper Award==
Since 1998, SBBD sponsors the Jose Mauro de Castilho (JMC) Award for the Symposium's best paper. Papers submitted to both tracks can be considered. If the final program allows, the best paper will be presented during an official cerimony. Both papers in English and Portugues will be considered for the award.
